ABSTRACT:
In this session, Élise, Valéry, and Kristin will present findings from a research project on the ethical challenges facing animal welfare organizations. This project is a collaboration between the Montreal SPCA and university researchers in animal ethics from Canada and abroad. The project is funded by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC).

This collaboration identifies some of the most pressing ethical challenges faced by animal welfare organizations, such as the SPCA, and proposes responses to them. In this presentation, we will present first results from this project. We will invite audience members to share their views on the proposed responses as well as insights from their own work. We will also comment on the potential for collaboration between animal welfare practitioners and academic researchers.

KEY LEARNINGS:

  1. Overview of ethical challenges faced by animal welfare organizations such as the SPCA.
  2. Discussion of possible responses to these challenges.
  3. How to create useful collaborations between academic researchers and animal welfare organizations.
